Art pick-up dates and times for Juried Student Art Show

A Message from the KC Art Gallery Director:

The student art show will run through commencement on Saturday, May 15, 2010. Work cannot be picked up prior to that date.

Students may pick up their artwork:
Sat, May 15 from noon - 2 p.m.
Mon, May 17 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Tue, May 18 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Wed, May 19 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

After these dates the Art Gallery will be closed for the summer, and any work that remains unclaimed will be discarded at the discretion of the Art Gallery/Art Department.

Art Chicago this weekend, Apr. 30 - May 3

A high-end art fair is taking place this weekend in Chicago at Merchandise Mart. Anyone who can make it should definitely check it out.

As described on the Art Chicago website:

"Art Chicago® 2010, the annual international fair of contemporary and modern art, brings together the world’s leading emerging and established galleries. Art Chicago offers curators, collectors, artists and art enthusiasts a comprehensive survey of current and historic work, from cutting-edge to modern masters in a wide variety of media including: painting, photography, drawings, prints, sculpture, video and special installations."

Jon Sazonoff is a noted authority on art crime. Based in Chicago, he publishes “Art Theft – Search for the World’s Most Wanted Art” (www.saztv.com) the leading (Google) web-site for the terms art theft and stolen art.

His research has been cited in Smithsonian lectures, FBI talks, INTERPOL symposia, and international conferences. His work has been cited on the web-sites of reputable organizations such as the International Council of Museums, American Bar Association, Harvard Law School, Britain’s Dept of Culture, Media, & Sport, Spain's National Police, the BBC, Le Monde, the MGM “Thomas Crown Affair” web-site and more.

Since 1998, he also assists the European based Museum Security Network as contributing US Editor. In that capacity, he helps select daily news for the world’s cultural property protection community. As such, he’s well connected with a number of international authorities in the world of art, crime, & media.

Born 1959 in Deerfield, IL son of a community leader and journalist. With roots in journalism, Sazonoff received his BA in 1983 (History; Northern Illinois University) and did further graduate work in anthropology & museum studies. Prior to founding Saz Productions, his background included running professional concert security, working in museum security, as an antiques conservator, as an anthropology instructor, and appraiser.

In 1995 Sazonoff established Saz Productions with the goal of providing quality content for the changing media landscape. TV & digital media are powerful tools. As a member of (NATPE) the National Association of Television Programming Executives, he champions the cause of bringing digital media into the fight against culture’s thieves.

Reject Art Show

If your work was submitted and rejected from the Spring 2010 Juried Art Show, the Art Department is putting up a Rejected Art Show in the Art Department halls. The reason is, we honor those whose work was submitted, but also understand much great work is rejected each year and like to provide a venue for your work to be seen and appreciated. So help brighten up our halls by speaking with your art instructors about putting up the Rejected Art Show!

Field Trip to Chicago to Art Institute of Chicago

What: Field Trip to Art Institute of Chicago
Where: Chicago, IL
When: Saturday, January 16th from 8:25 am - 7:06 pm
Why: See a great art museum, visit the NEW Modern Wing, and see the Caravaggio painting on loan until Jan. 24th.

How: We meet at the Metra Elburn Train Station at 8 am. The train leaves at 8:25 am and takes us directly to Chicago. From there, we take 1 CTA bus that drops us right in front of the museum. We tour, walk around, eat lunch, tour, then go on home. We will catch the 5:40 pm train going home.

Costs: 2 one-way train tickets: $10
Bus Fare: $4.

Parking at Elburn: $1.25

Admission to Museum: $ 12 with student ID
Lunch: pack a lunch, or buy one.
Total: $27.25 plus lunch, etc.

Act fast. There are no Caravaggio's in the country. This one is on loan until next weekend from Europe. Caravaggio is one of the best figure painters who ever picked up a brush. Very influential. A rapscallion and a genius too. So much to see and do. Millennium Park will be visited (right next to the museum)!

I will be your guide! You will be safe, and won't be lost! Chicago is like Malta, only bigger. Come with me to see the art. All are welcome. Bring a friend.

Thomas Hoving, former Director to the Metropolitan Musem of Art, dead at 78

Wow. I did not realize Thomas Hoving died a few weeks ago, but he is a very interesting man in the art world. Read his New York Times Obituary here.

An eccentric man, art collector, and man responsible for transforming and revitalizing the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, was not just a mover and shaker with the politcal art elites, he also loved sharing his excitement about good art with the populace. I will miss his enthusiasm. Among things you may remember him for, if you ever saw the movie, Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?, he was one of the experts who viewed the disputed Pollock painting found at a garage sale for $5, and stated his expert opinion that it was a fake. From time to time, he also did online video reviews of artworks and shows for ARTNet.com called, My Eye with Thomas Hoving. Let's take a trip to Chicago, and see Caravaggio!

Hi all. I hope that you are having a great Winter break! I just realized that a fantastic Caravaggio painting is on loan from The National Gallery of London to the Art Institute of Chicago. Caravaggio is an Italian artist, and the most important painting artist of the Baroque Art period, the period that follows the Renaissance. He picked up where Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael left off with chiaroscuro lighting, and made it bigger, and more dramatic.

A very interesting artist, and one of the greatest painters who ever lived. So few of Michelangelo Caravaggio's paintings exist in America. Unless you are planning a trip to Italy any time soon, go see it in January in our backyard of Chicago!!! If you are going to Italy...then bring me back a David Statuette! Just kidding, but go see this painting.

If Caravaggio is not incentive enough, you also get to see the new Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. It will blow you away. I will try to arrange a field trip in late January. More information below.

October 10, 2009–January 24, 2010 Gallery 211

This is an extremely rare opportunity to view firsthand one of the most highly regarded paintings by one of the most influential Western artists of all time. There are very few paintings by Caravaggio in American museums, and none that can rival this painting in its immediate impact. The Supper at Emmaus, painted in 1601 for a Roman nobleman, comes from the outset of a new, mature

phase of the master’s career in which he treated great religious subjects with uncompromising realism, while at the same time employing his trademark contrasts of light and dark to great dramatic effect. In this revelatory image, two of Christ’s disciples have just recognized that the stranger at their table is none other than Christ himself, reappearing to them after his death and Resurrection.

The Supper at Emmaus will serve as the centerpiece for a focus installation in Gallery 211 of the Art Institute’s collection of “Caravaggesque” paintings. Caravaggio’s insistence on heightened realism and the sculptural qualities of his figures, often brightly lit against a dark background, are evident in works such as Bartolomeo Manfredi’s Cupid Chastised and Cecco del Caravaggio’s The Resurrection. A gallery brochure will also lead visitors to other galleries where the diffusion of Caravaggio’s style throughout Europe will be immediately apparent in works such as Rembrandt’s Old Man with a Gold Chain and Rubens’s The Capture of Samson.
