Robert Rauschenberg passed away on Monday morning. Barbara Rose of the Wall Street Journal writes an informative article about the artist and how he made his break into the art world. I volunteer in a program called GREAT ARTS for Tilton Elementary School where my daughters attend. GREAT ARTS mission is to supplement the art history that has been cut out of the children’s curriculum. Two years ago when my oldest daughter was in the fourth grade one of the artists we studied was Robert Rauschenberg and specifically his work that is pictured on the blog titled “Retroactive 1”. To make this interesting to the kids I would often have a project that was intended to tie in to the piece we were studying that month. This was one of the projects that I will never forget. I had asked the class to the month before to save some magazines to be used for this project. We took those magazines and each student created a collage to reflect the current times like Rauschenberg had done with “Retroactive 1”. The images of the war in Iraq, the mars rover, and President Bush provided us with collages that would have made even Rauschenberg smile. The students were all proud of themselves for the works they created with the inspiration provided by “Retroactive 1”. The only time the students had more fun with an artist that year was when we all created our own Jackson Pollack paintings
